About the Course

This course is based on two films from the HBO Video Series “Addiction.” **Separate links are provided for each of the two films.*

In An Interview With Mark L. Willenbring, M.D.,
the Director of Treatment and Recovery Research at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) discusses the different factors that can lead to alcoholism, including genetics and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, new FDA-approved medications that may help reduce the risk of relapse are discussed.

In Topiramate: A Clinical Trial for Alcoholism, a medication called topiramate is being tested at the CARE Clinic in Charlottesville, VA. The video focuses on two test subjects who have turned to the drug as a way to combat chronic alcoholism.
