About the Course

For five years, The National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse (CASA) at Columbia University has been analyzing the impact of substance abuse on juvenile offenders and how the nation’s juvenile justice systems deal with these offenders. The result is this report, Criminal Neglect: Substance Abuse, Juvenile Justice and The Children Left Behind, the most comprehensive study ever undertaken of substance abuse and the state juvenile justice systems.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Discuss key findings of an examination of the relationship between substance abuse and juvenile delinquency, including the cost that substance abuse imposes on juvenile justice systems.
  2. Describe missed opportunities of prevention and explain what is needed to prevent substance-involved delinquency.
  3. Identify what is needed to treat substance-involved delinquent juveniles, and discuss the authors' recommendations for addressing the problem.
