About the Course:
Research consistently shows a high prevalence of suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts among persons with substance abuse problems who are in treatment. Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) 50, Addressing Suicidal Thoughts and Behaviors in Substance Abuse Treatment is designed to assist in working with adult clients who may be suicidal. Part 2 is an implementation guide for program administrators. Part 2: Chapter 1 – The Administrative Response to Suicidality in Substance Abuse Treatment Settings helps in understanding how administrators can provide support for programs and counselors as they address clients’ suicidal thoughts and behaviors. It is hoped that this knowledge will enable treatment programs to become suicide capable; that is, to treat substance abuse while concurrently addressing the specific needs of those who have warning signs for suicide. Course materials are from Part 2: Chapter 1, found on pages 91 to 105 of pdf document (pages 99-113 if using Adobe toolbar page finder). Course materials can be accessed either 1) online or 2) by ordering the book free of charge from: http://ncadistore.samhsa.gov/catalog/productDetails.aspx?ProductID=18118
