Motivations and Strategies for Terminating Gambling Relapses

About the Course:

This study provides a descriptive exploration of the reasons why individuals who experienced a gambling relapse terminated the relapse episode and how they did so. Thirty-eight males and twenty-two females were administered the Relapse Experience Interview. The strategies used were identified as either cognitive or behavioral and were classified according to the processes of change model.

About the Authors:

David Hodgins, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and associate professor at the University of Calgary. His research interests lie in the area of addictive behaviors, including alcohol and gambling addictions, and co-morbid psychiatric disorders. Specifically, he conducts research in the process of recovery from problems including brief motivational interventions. He is also interested in understanding the process of relapse to addictive behaviors.

Kylie Louise Thygesen, B.A., is a project coordinator and research assistant in the Addictive Behaviours Laboratory at the University of Calgary. Her primary research area in the last three years has been in gambling studies. She also works as a psychology assistant and volunteers as a crisis support line worker.

  1. Discuss the frequency of relapse among pathological gamblers and reasons and strategies for terminating relapse found in studies of other addictions.

  2. Explain the methodology of the reported study, including participants, measures, and procedures.

  3. Describe study results, including reasons and strategies given by study participants for terminating relapse.
