About the Course

In a previous issue of the Electronic Journal of Gambling Issues, Griffiths raised 10 speculative reasons as to why so few adolescents enroll for treatment programs when compared with adults. This paper explores the issue a little further with another 11 possible reasons.

Serge Chevalier

Serge Chevalier is a sociologist with the Montreal Public Health Department. He is currently spending a year as an invited researcher at McGill's International Centre for Youth Gambling Problems and High-Risk Behaviours. More recently, he was involved in Quebec-wide studies of gambling behaviour and problems with adults and high-school populations. He has directed or contributed to much research on gambling. He was the principal researcher for many segments of the evaluation of the services offered to pathological gamblers and their relatives in Quebec. As well, he has published papers on public policies on gambling in the province.

Mark Griffiths

Dr. Mark Griffiths (BSc, PhD, PGDipHE, CPsychol) is professor of gambling studies at Nottingham Trent University. He is internationally known for his work in gambling and gaming addictions and was the first recipient of the John Rosecrance Research Prize for "Outstanding scholarly contributions to the field of gambling research," winner of the CELEJ Prize for best paper on gambling, and winner of the International Excellence Award for "outstanding contributions to the prevention of problem gambling and the practice of responsible gambling." He has published over 120 refereed research papers, two books, numerous book chapters, and over 350 other articles.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially addiction counselors, psychologists, mental health counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about why adolescents don't turn up for gambling treatment. It is appropriate for all levels of participants' knowledge.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify speculative reasons previously outlined by Griffiths as to why adolescents may NOT seek help for gambling problems.
  2. Discuss limitations to the speculations previously offered.
  3. List and discuss further considerations regarding the question of why adolescents fail to seek help for gambling problems in large numbers.
