This book shows how the story of drugs illuminates the story of humanity, exploring the long-relationship between human beings and mind altering substances. Also examined is the present-day differences between drug-tolerant societies and countries advocating complete repression of these substances. Included in this book is a comprehensive analysis of the enormous social costs of the drug war.

After taking this course, you should be able to:
Trace the development of modern drug use from its religious overtones in the Middle Ages through its chemical underpinnings in the nineteenth century.
Recognize the acceptance and prohibition of certain mind-altering substances in Islam.
Describe the use of drugs in ancient Greek and Roman societies and in early paganism.
Demonstrate the contrast between the repression of drug use in the early twentieth century, its explosive manifestation in the psychedelic rebellion, and its aftermath.
