Individuals with autism and their caregivers face unique challenges in later childhood and adolescence, yet this period is often neglected in the professional literature. Gabriels, Robin L., PsyD.
Robin L. Gabriels is a licensed clinical psychologist who has written articles on asthma and autism and has also lectured, consulted and conducted workshops on autism. She has a doctorate in clinical psychology and an MA in Art Therapy. She was the founder and director of the art therapy department at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center.
Hill, Dina E., PhD.
Dina E. Hill is a licensed clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor at the Center for Neuropsychology at the University of New Mexico. She has written articles and book chapters on ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders and Neuroimaging.

Course Objectives:

After taking this course, you should be able to:

  1. Identify ways to promote positive behavior and social skills in children and adolescents with autism.
  2. Describe ways to address communication and language problems in young people with autism.
  3. Apply relevant information regarding the management of mental and physical health issues with young autistic clients/patients.
  4. Assess suggestions offered regarding sexuality and autism in young people.
  5. Explain how parents and concerned others should access needed services and navigate the legal system regarding autistic youth.
  6. Describe how family life and leisure time can be improved for families of autistic youth.
  7. Be able to provide examples of ways to optimize the educational and transitional planning processes for autistic youth.
