About the Course

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), which supports more than 85 percent of the world’s research on drug abuse and addiction, has found that behavioral approaches can be very effective in treating cocaine addiction. To ensure that treatment providers apply the most current scientifically supported approaches to their patients, NIDA has supported the development of the “Therapy Manuals for Drug Addiction” series. The manuals present clear, helpful information to aid drug treatment practitioners in providing the best possible care that science has to offer. This course is taken from Therapy Manual 4, Chapters 3 and 4. Adobe pages covered are 11-17.

This course is based on the reading-based online article, Drug Counseling for Cocaine Addiction: The Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study Model: Overview of Group Treatment and Supervision of Counselors created by Daley, Dennis C., Ph.D. et al.

This treatment manual was authored by Dennis C. Daley, Ph.D., Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic; Delinda Mercer, Ph.D., University of Pennsylvania; and Gloria Carpenter, M.Ed., University of Pennsylvania, under contract to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). The Group Drug Counseling (GDC) model that serves as the basis of this manual was used in a large, multisite treatment research project entitled the Collaborative Cocaine Treatment Study (CCTS). Supported by NIDA and conducted over several years, the CCTS is one of the largest studies of the outpatient treatment of cocaine dependence ever conducted.

Daley, Dennis C., Ph.D. et al. authored the material only, and was not involved in creating this CE course. They are identified here for your own evaluation of the relevancy of the material this course is based on.
