About the Course:
This course presents an empirically based model for treating cocaine addiction in a group setting. This Group Drug Counseling (GDC) manual addresses common issues in the early and middle stages of recovery from addiction, and is based on the philosophy that cocaine addiction is a complex biopsychosocial disease. Issues addressed include stabilization procedure, overview of group treatment, supervision of group counselors, case management , and family involvement. The psychoeducational group sessions are presented and discussed, as are problem-solving groups. Suggested readings and educational videos are given for treatment professionals, clients, and families.

This course is recommended for health care professionals, especially drug addiction treatment personnel, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and nurses who seek knowledge about a group drug counseling (GDC) approach for treating cocaine addiction. It is appropriate for intermediate to advanced levels, all levels of participants’ knowledge.
Demonstrate a working knowledge of the cocaine treatment model presented.
Describe the purpose and operation of the psychoeducational group sessions.
Explain the goals and format of the problem-solving group as presented in the course material.
Be familiar with and able to apply case management and family involvement concepts presented.
Be able to apply course concepts to the development of cocaine treatment programs for special populations.
