About the Author:

She is a professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Akron. She currently is President-Elect of the Society for the Psychology of Women, Division 35 of the American Psychological Association. Dr. Yoder wrote another book with Jerome Adams on Effective Leadership for Women and Men, and has published extensively in Psychology of Women Quarterly, Sex Roles, Gender & Society, and Feminism & Psychology as well as other journals.

Course Objectives:

  1. To be able to develop an appreciation for how psychology has been and continues to be transformed by a feminist approach to understanding women, men, and gender.

  2. To be able to develop an awareness that a complete approach to understanding women, men, and gender includes biological, socialization and personality, and social contextual explanations.

  3. To be able to develop a recognition that gender is inextricably intertwined with other markers of social status such as race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, physical (dis)ability, age, and so on.

  4. To be able to develop an acknowledgement that the ultimate usefulness of what we do as feminist psychologists rests in social activism and personal empowerment.
